When you order a birthday cake, the cake itself is only half the story. The rest is detail: when it is needed, how big it should be, what flavour, what it should say and how it will reach the party. Asking the right questions at the start saves a lot of rushed phone calls later. Here are eight questions worth asking any baker in Nairobi, including us.
Before you order a birthday cake: the basics
1. How far ahead do I need to order? Bakers differ, and a plain cake is quicker than a custom design. Ask for the lead time as soon as you know the date, and order early if the party falls on a weekend or a holiday.
2. How big should the cake be? Cake is usually sold by weight, so think in kilograms. Our guide to how much cake you need turns a guest list into a size.
3. Which flavour will most guests enjoy? Our cake menu includes chocolate, fruit and layered cakes, plus sugar free and wheat free options. If tastes are split, a multi flavored cake lets you combine two or three flavours in one.

Design, message and special requests
4. What can the cake look like? Ask which designs and decorations the baker offers and what they add to the price. We bake special themed cakes, from dinosaurs to cars and superheroes, and can print a photo or design on edible paper with our edible photo print option. If you want a message on the cake, keep it short so it is easy to read.
5. What is in it, and is it right for everyone? If anyone has an allergy or follows a special diet, say so at the time of ordering and ask exactly what the cake contains. Do not assume. We bake sugar free and wheat free cakes, and if you mention an allergy we will go through the ingredients with you.
How to order a birthday cake and get it there
6. Is it pickup or delivery? Ask which is available for your date and area, what delivery costs and what time the cake will arrive. If you are collecting it, our guide to how to store a cake explains how to carry it and keep it safe.
7. What is the full price, and how do I pay? Ask what the price includes, such as size, decoration and delivery, and when and how payment is due, so there are no surprises on the day.
8. Where will the cake sit at the party? Plan a cool, shaded spot away from sun and heat, and make fridge space if the cake has fresh cream. Bring a sharp knife and a cake server, and decide in advance who will do the cutting.
